“At least three people have been killed, only a few houses remain in multiple settlements”
(Auckland = Yonhap News) Correspondent Ko Han-seong = The Tongan government’s first official statement was issued three days after the eruption of a submarine volcano near Tonga, an island nation in the South Pacific on the 15th (local time).
According to the AFP news agency, the Tongan government said on the 18th that “a 15-meter tsunami caused by a volcanic eruption struck the Tonga beach area, destroying houses and killing at least three people. went out,” he said.
“There are only a few left at home in various settlements across the archipelago,” he added.
Due to the damage from the volcanic eruption, communication with the outside world is cut off, and the detailed local situation is not known.
New Zealand media, citing Tongan government officials, said that both international and domestic communication networks were cut off, and only limited communication via satellite phones and high-frequency radio were available.
They also reported that they are evacuating residents from some small islands with a lot of damage, and emergency response personnel have been dispatched to Mango, Ponoipua and Nomuka Islands, which have suffered major damage, and are distributing emergency food and relief supplies.
The New Zealand Navy ship carrying relief supplies left for Tonga the day before because the Tonga airport was thickly covered with volcanic ash and planes could not land.
New Zealand’s Foreign Ministry said the US submarine cable company, Subcom, had estimated that it would take at least four weeks to restore Tonga’s telecommunication cables.
