Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon to Join Manchester United on Loan: A Blow to Son Heung-min’s ‘Best Friend’

Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon Transfer to Manchester United

January Loan Option with Salary Covered

Manchester United has made a significant move in the January transfer window by securing the loan signing of Tottenham’s left-back, Sergio Reguilon. This transfer comes as Manchester United looks to strengthen their squad, particularly in the absence of injured left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyral Malacia.

The decision to pursue Reguilon over other potential options such as Marc Cucurella from Chelsea and Marcos Alonso from Barcelona highlights Manchester United’s intent to bolster their defensive resources. However, it is believed that Reguilon was favored due to the impending return of Luke Shaw from injury in November, making a season-long loan relatively unnecessary.

Reguilon, 26, began his professional career at Real Madrid before making a name for himself at Sevilla. In 2020, he joined Tottenham, forming a strong partnership with fellow teammate Son Heung-min on the left flank. Despite initially finding success under former manager Antonio Conte, Reguilon faced challenges and was subsequently loaned out to Atletico Madrid last season, where he struggled with injuries.

Upon his return to Tottenham this season, Reguilon expressed his excitement at reuniting with Son Heung-min, but unfortunately, he has been unable to secure a place in the team under current manager Angie Postecoglu. As a result, the opportunity to join Manchester United on loan presents a fresh start for the talented full-back.

According to reports, Manchester United has obtained permission for Reguilon’s medical, and the loan contract includes a clause that allows for its termination in January. Additionally, Manchester United will cover Reguilon’s salary during this loan period without having to pay a transfer fee.

This move signifies Manchester United’s determination to reinforce their squad and overcome the challenges they have faced in signing players before the summer transfer window deadline. With the acquisition of Sergio Reguilon, Manchester United aims to strengthen their defensive options and maintain their pursuit of success in the English Premier League.

Sergio Reguilon (26), who is considered the ‘best friend’ of Son Heung-min (31) at Tottenham in the English Premier League (EPL), is transferring to Manchester United on loan soon. Manchester United seemed to want Pierre-Emile Hoivier (28) in midfield recently, but ultimately chose Reguilon, a full-back resource.

The Athletic UK reported on the 1st (Korea time), “Man Utd has decided to lease left-back Reguilon. Man Utd has received permission for Regilon’s medical.” In addition, it is said that the January lease contract can be terminated, along with a clause that Manchester United will carry the salary without a transfer fee.

Manchester United are struggling to sign players until the summer transfer window deadline. Recently, with the departure of left back resources Luke Shaw and Tyral Malacia due to injuries, the gap has widened, and they have been trying to recruit players for the position.

Manchester United struggled with Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, Barcelona’s Marcos Alonso and Tottenham’s Reguilon. It is clear why the decision was made for Reguilon in the recruitment that tended to start for Cucurella. This is because Luke Shaw can return in November after receiving treatment for an injury for around two months, so a one-season loan is almost unnecessary. Man Utd appear to have taken a string towards Regilon’s recruitment by imposing a condition to terminate the lease agreement with Tottenham in January.

Reguilon spent his youth career at Real Madrid in Spain and continued his full career at Sevilla. After moving to Tottenham in 2020, he stepped in with Son Heung-min from the left and crossed the starting line. However, the following year, after manager Antonio Conte took over, he lost his place, and left on loan to Atletico Madrid last season, but did not play properly due to injury. He returned to Tottenham again this season, but has been unable to make the list under current manager Angie Postecoglu.

Reguilon returned to Tottenham and was delighted to be reunited with Son Heung-min, posting pictures and writings on social media, saying, “I missed you, ‘Sonnaldo’.” However, for now, he was separated from Son Heung-min and competed again.
