At the world’s most prestigious road cycling event, the Tour de France, due to the reckless behavior of one of the spectators, a group of athletes collided and injuries occurred.
According to AFP and local media on the 26th (local time), a large-scale collision between athletes occurred during the Tour de France 2021 held in Brest, western France on the same day. The Tour de France, which marks its 108th anniversary this year, is a cycling event that goes around France for three weeks, attracting cyclists from all over the world.
The accident occurred 45 km from the finish line. A spectator standing on the side of the road pointed at the camera and held up a sign that read ‘Allez Opi Omi (Cheer up, Grandpa, Grandma)’. The problem was that this spectator pushed the sign toward the road the players were running.
As a result, German player Tony Martin crashed into a sign and fell, and numerous players on either side of him and behind him fell one after another like dominoes. The chaotic stadium was temporarily suspended for reopening. In the accident, not only the players but also some other spectators were injured, and some players gave up the tournament due to injuries, foreign media reported.
According to local media, the spectators who grabbed the sign fled the scene and their identities were not confirmed. Tour de France organizers have decided to take legal action against spectators who crossed the sign. An official from the organizers explained, “We have decided to sue so that very few people do not ruin the event for all.”
