Busan, South Korea – The search for a missing citizen in Busan continued for the second day, as approximately 300 personnel were deployed to aid in the rescue efforts.

Surrounding residents couldn’t help but feel a sense of sorrow as they observed the ongoing search operations near Oncheonjang Station on the Busan Metro Line 1 in Geumjeong-gu. The incident occurred when heavy rain suddenly caused the water level to rise in Oncheoncheon Stream on the afternoon of the 20th.

One eyewitness, Mr. A, recounted the harrowing scene, stating, “Yesterday, I came here and was shocked to see the high water level. There was a woman desperately clinging to the pier, only her face above the water.” Unfortunately, the person, referred to as Mr. B, lost their grip and was swept away by the strong current, remaining missing for two days.

The Busan Fire and Disaster Headquarters received the first report from a concerned citizen at 5:48 pm on the 21st.

Rescue teams arrived at the scene around 5:55 pm, but tragically, Mr. B lost hold of the pier pillar and was carried away by the river, making it impossible to reach him. This occurred around 6:01 pm, just six minutes after rescue personnel arrived.

In a briefing at the site, Kwon Ho-jun, the head of the Geumjeong Fire Station’s field response team, explained the challenges faced during the rescue attempt. He stated, “At rush hour with heavy traffic, the water flow in the Oncheon Stream was extremely fast. The rescue team faced difficulties in accessing the location for rescue operations.” Despite their efforts, the team determined that it was too dangerous to try to reach the person from upstream.

The incident left the surrounding citizens feeling helpless as they witnessed the heartbreaking event unfold. Witness A, clearly distraught, shared, “After losing hold of the pier, the woman collided with several other pillars before disappearing. This place holds personal significance to me, and I fear this incident will leave a lasting trauma.”

On the second day of the search, the Busan Fire and Disaster Headquarters organized a thorough search operation, dividing the 5.3km stretch into four sections from Oncheonjang Station to the entrance of the Suyeong River. Oncheoncheon Stream meets the Suyeong River before flowing into the sea near Gwangan Bridge.

A total of 370 individuals, including 135 firefighters and 185 personnel from associated organizations, have been mobilized for the search operation. Additionally, 47 firefighting equipment, including boats, have been deployed. Despite the scale of the search, difficulties arise due to the inability of boats to access the Oncheoncheon Stream section.

To combat this challenge, firefighting helicopters have been deployed to conduct low-altitude searches, and the Coastguard is providing support for the maritime search.

Busan was hit with heavy rain the day prior, prompting a heavy rain advisory at around 4:30 pm. Within a few hours, Geumjeong-gu received over 60 mm of rainfall. The district office subsequently restricted access to Oncheoncheon Trail at approximately 5:30 pm.

At the time of Mr. B’s disappearance, the depth of the hot spring was approximately 2.5m, double the normal water level. This rapid rise in water level suggests the swift onset of flooding.

Authorities have yet to confirm Mr. B’s personal information.

The area around Oncheoncheon Stream near Exit 4 of Oncheonjang Station on Busan Metro Line 1 in Geumjeong-gu, Busan, where a disappearance occurred as the water suddenly rose due to heavy rain on the afternoon of the 20th.

While the search continued for the second day, nearby residents around the site were looking at the hot springs with sadness.

Mr explained A, who witnessed the accident, “Yesterday, there were a lot of people here, so I went there and saw that the water was very high. There was a woman holding on to the pier with only her face barely above the water .”

Mr. lost B, and testified Mr. And, his grip on the pier while holding on, and he was carried away by the current, and he has been missing for two days.

According to the Busan Fire and Disaster Headquarters, the first report was received from a citizen at 5:48pm on the 21st.

The rescue team arrived at the scene at around 5:55 pm, but in the process of preparing for rescue, Mr B lost his grip on the pier pillar and drifted into the river, so they could not rescue him.

According to the fire authorities, the time Mr B drifted away was around 6:01 pm, six minutes after the rescue team arrived.

Kwon Ho-jun, head of the Geumjeong Fire Station’s field response team, explained in a briefing session at the site that day, “It was a rush hour when traffic was heavy, and the water flow at the Oncheon Stream site at the time was very fast ,” added, “It was a process of preparation for rescue in locations where rescue is difficult, such as the access road.”

The rescue team decided that it would be difficult to rescue the person by going upstream from the downstream because the current speed was very high at the time.

Accordingly, they decided to descend from upstream to downstream and find an access road and move about 170m. When this was not possible, the rescue team tied their bodies to a pole around the site with a rope and were about to jump right in.

Director Kwon said, “The claimant drifted off while tying himself to a nearby pillar and immediately tried to get inside. This is not a situation that the public can approach, and it is almost impossible to get in unless it is specially trained personnel like our rescue team.” “It was,” he said.

The surrounding citizens had no choice but to stamp their feet and watch the sad moment unfold.

Witness A said, “After missing the pillar, the woman hit another pillar several times and then disappeared. This is a place that I personally like very much, but I believe that this incident will traumatizing,” and could not continue to speak easily.

On the second day of the search, the Busan Fire and Disaster Headquarters is conducting a search by dividing the 5.3km section into four areas from the vicinity of Oncheonjang Station, the site of the initial disappearance, to the entrance of the Suyeong River, which connects downstream from Oncheoncheon Stream.

Oncheoncheon Stream meets the Suyeong River and leads to the sea in front of Gwangan Bridge.

A total of 370 people, including 135 firefighters and 185 associated organisations, are involved in the search operation, and 47 firefighting equipment, including boats, are being mobilised.

However, difficulties are expected as the search target area is quite large and boats cannot enter the Oncheoncheon Stream section.

Accordingly, firefighting helicopters were deployed and flown at low altitudes to search for missing persons, and the Coastguard also supported the maritime search.

In Busan, a heavy rain advisory was issued around 4:30 pm the previous day, and rain poured down suddenly.

Heavy rain of over 60 mm fell in Geumjeong-gu in just a few hours, and the district office restricted access to Oncheoncheon Trail around 5:30 pm

At the time of the disappearance of Mr. B, the depth of the hot spring was about 2.5m based on the coastal bridge, which was about twice the normal water level, so it is assumed that the water rose rapidly in a short period of time. .

It is said that Mr B’s personal information has not yet been identified.
