Will there be a scene where the former president of the United States and a black prosecutor from Harlem sit face to face in a New York City courtroom?

Former New York State Attorney General Alvin Bragg, from Harlem, has emerged as a potential next-generation prosecutor for the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, which is leading the investigation into former US President Donald Trump.

According to the New York Times (NYT) on the 22nd (local time), Bragg maintains first place with 84% of the vote count as a result of the Democratic primary to determine the candidate for the next Manhattan Attorney General. The final round of voting will be held in November. However, the position of Manhattan Attorney General has been held by the Democrats since 1942, so if Bragg is confirmed as the Democratic nominee, there is a high probability that he will be elected in the final. In most U.S. states, the Attorney General and County District Attorney are elected directly by voters.

The Manhattan District Prosecutor’s Office is in charge of Wall Street, where the world’s leading financial companies are concentrated, and is so influential that it is counted among the top prosecutors in the United States. The annual budget alone is about 125 million dollars (about 141 billion won), and there are more than 500 lawyers. A major financial crime investigation went through this prosecutor, and the case of Harvey Weinstein, which became the fuse of the #MeToo movement, was also handled by the Manhattan District Attorney. If elected, Bragg would become the first black Manhattan Attorney General.

In particular, it is because of former President Trump, who is interested in the position of the next Manhattan Attorney General. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has recently been tracking the flow of money from the Trump group. Previously, in 2016, while conducting an investigation into the allegation that company funds went to a former porn star who claims to have an extramarital affair with Trump, he caught tax evasion. In particular, a full-scale investigation has been carried out since Trump resigned, and a special grand jury convened last month for criminal prosecution. The Washington Post reported that the grand jury convened “means that the Manhattan District Attorney has found evidence to enter the crime.”

The “bad relationship” between Bragg and Trump in the past is also attracting attention. According to the WSJ, Bragg served as the New York State Attorney General from 2017 to 2018, filing more than 100 lawsuits against the Trump administration and the foundation. As a result, it also led to a ruling that Trump had misappropriated funds from nonprofit foundations during the 2016 presidential election.

“I work for the New York State Attorney’s Office,” Bragg told The New York Times. “I have investigated Trump and his children and held them accountable for misconduct by the Trump Foundation,” Bragg told The New York Times.

According to the New York Times, the winner of the primary will be determined a week after all absentee ballots are counted.
