Turkey appoints German ambassador

Turkey has received warnings from several quarters about possible terrorist attacks. The Turkish Foreign Minister raises serious allegations.

Turkey has summoned the German ambassador because of warnings from other governments of possible terrorist attacks on its territory. In addition, the diplomatic representatives of the United States, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain, Belgium, France and Italy were invited to the Foreign Ministry in Ankara on Thursday, diplomatic sources said. Several agencies had previously warned of an increased risk of attacks in Turkey. The background to this was the desecration of the Koran in several countries.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu made serious accusations against the embassies. “If you want to create the image that Turkey is unstable and that there is a risk of terrorism, then that is incompatible with friendship and partnership.” Turkey had not been informed who was at risk and which places were specifically at risk. The ambassadors have now been “reminded” that such actions only serve the “insidious agenda of terrorist organizations”.

Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu called the warnings a product of a foreign conspiracy. According to the state news agency Anadolu, he addressed the US ambassador and said: “Get your dirty hands off Turkey.” Previously, he had repeatedly accused the US of being behind the 2016 coup and the November 2022 bombing in central Istanbul. Soylu is considered an ultra-nationalist hardliner and is known for conspiracy theory statements.
