Turkey discovers 694 million tons of rare earth mines, Chinese media question figures – Hong Kong unwire.hk

According to foreign media reports, the world’s second largest rare earth resource has been discovered in Turkey. Its reserves can meet the world’s needs for 1,000 years. After processing, it may bring billions of dollars to Turkey. However, the figures it found were questioned by the Chinese media.

Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmez revealed that deposits discovered in Eskisehir province in northwestern Turkey contain about 694 million tons of rare earths. The newly discovered reserves are sufficient to meet the world’s needs for 1,000 years and can process approximately 570,000 tons of ore per year, creating jobs for local people.

Fatih Donmez also pointed out that because the deposit is very close to the surface, the cost of extracting the element will be lower, and rare earth elements will be used in fields such as defense, aerospace industry and biomedicine.

However, the Chinese media “Hua Shang Tao Strategy” questioned the figures. The article pointed out that the proven reserves of rare earths in the world in 2020 are only 120 million tons, which is far lower than 694 million tons, and China, as the world’s largest rare earth storage country and producer, has only 44 million tons of reserves. 694 million tons of rare earth mines are only 100,000 tons of rare earth reserves.

It is understood that the discovered new rare earths contain 17 different elements, which can be divided into two categories: light rare earths and heavy rare earths: lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium and europium, which are light rare earths, are widely used, with outstanding commercial value and dosage. Larger; gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, scandium, and yttrium, which are heavy rare earths, are relatively scarcer, less replaceable, and more expensive.
