Sheridan Smith and Michael Socha star in a new BBC One drama series titled The Cage, which premieres on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at 9pm. The series is written and created by Tony Schumacher, known for his work on the gritty police drama The Responder.
The Cage is set in and around a chintzy Liverpool casino, where Smith plays Leanne, a stressed single mother working as a cashier who begins skimming money from the casino safe to secure her family’s future. Socha portrays Matty, her boss, who is also secretly taking cash from the business while battling personal struggles with gambling, intoxicants, and loan sharks.
The series explores the collision course between Leanne and Matty as they realise they are both stealing from the same workplace, forcing them to navigate trust, loyalty, and survival amid pressure from local gangsters and law enforcement. Schumacher described the show’s title as a nod to the cashier’s cage where money and chips are exchanged, but emphasized his focus on the characters’ difficult circumstances rather than the casino setting itself.
The Cage is a five-part, 60-minute-per-episode crime drama produced by Element Pictures, the company behind acclaimed productions such as Poor Things and Normal People. All episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer starting Sunday, April 26, 2026, and will air weekly on BBC One at 9pm.
The cast also includes Barry Sloane as Gary Packer, Geraldine James as Nancy Packer, Anton Bibby as Thomas Chapel, Freya Jones as Emily Flynn, Sophie Mensah as Fen, Shaun Mason as Alan, Louis Emerick as Paul, Sue Jenkins as Shelagh Flynn, Eileen O’Brien as ‘Nanna’, and Mona Goodwin as Trace. The series is directed by Al Mackay, who has previously worked on Kidnapped and Without Sin, and was filmed on location in and around Liverpool and Merseyside.
Schumacher, a BAFTA award-nominated writer, brings his signature tense, character-driven storytelling to The Cage, drawing from his experience on The Responder to craft a story about flawed but relatable individuals pushed to their limits. The series was commissioned by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama.
Prior to its release, the BBC unveiled the official trailer for The Cage on April 16, 2026, generating anticipation for what Schumacher described as a high-stakes, emotionally charged drama centered on survival, morality, and the fragile bonds formed under pressure.
