| Twenty20 World Cup: Sri Lanka win

Cape Town: Sri Lanka beat South Africa by three runs in the first match of the Women’s Twenty20 Cricket World Cup. Batting first in the Group A match, Sri Lanka scored 129 runs for four wickets. In reply, South Africa were 126 for nine at the close of play.

South Africa needed 13 runs to win in the last over which was bowled by Sugandhika Kumari. Shabnim Ismail (seven) was run out in the second ball. Nonkululeko (five off three balls) and Ayabonga Khaka (one off two balls) missed runs. Heroine Sune Luz (28 including a six off 27 balls) was the only one to hold on. For Lanka, Inoka Ranaweera took three wickets and Oshadhi Ranasinghe and Sugandhika Kumari took two wickets each.

Heroine and opener Chamari Attappattu (68 off 50 balls) brought Lanka to a good level. No. 3 Vishmi Gunaratne (35 off 34 balls) also chipped in to create a century partnership. Chamari is the star of the game.
