U.S. Department of Justice appeals to U.S. Supreme Court over Texas abortion ban

The U.S. Department of Justice will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court to block the controversial abortion ban in Texas, a U.S. Department of Justice spokeswoman said on Friday. The Justice Department has argued that Texas’ abortion law is unconstitutional.

A federal appeals court earlier yesterday rejected the Justice Department’s request to end the Texas abortion ban. The decision of the Federal Court of Appeals was finally passed on to the Supreme Court.

In a lawsuit filed by the Justice Department against the state of Texas, a federal court on Monday ordered that the abortion ban “deprive women of their constitutional rights” and temporarily suspend the effect of the law. The state of Texas immediately appealed to the Fifth Court of Appeals, and the court ruled on the 15th that the abortion ban remained in effect, 2-1.

The Ministry of Justice did not specify when to appeal to the Supreme Court. The conservative state of Texas has banned abortions after the sixth week of pregnancy, when the fetus’ heartbeat is detected, starting last month, and the federal government has responded. The Department of Justice said it would provide assistance from federal law enforcement agencies if abortion facilities and health centers were attacked.
