The incident took place during the World Cup qualifier between the UAE and Iraq. Journalists who covered the match were making hateful and defamatory remarks. The comments made by the media during the reporting of the game did not appear on the television channel, but the comments made before the broadcast began were leaked by someone. The case was registered by the police after the controversial remarks went viral on social media. The federal public prosecution, which heard the case, ruled that the comments made by the media were “unethical” and provoked animosity and resentment between the two sides.
Following this, three journalists of the Abu Dhabi Media Sports Channel were fired. The court found one of them guilty. The other two were acquitted and released. The media reported that the convicted journalist was sentenced to five years in prison and fined $ 1360. Authorities have not released the names of the convicted journalists.
