(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Seong-heum Cho = Ukraine made it clear on the 30th (local time) that it would continue its offensive to restore territories after signing the agreement on the annexation of territories occupied with Russia. The door to dialogue between the two countries is completely closed as Russia is also in the position that it cannot give up the occupied territories which have now become its own territory.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a public speech after the meeting of the National Security Council on the same day that “expulsion of the occupiers is the only way to restore peace.”

“As long as Putin is president, there will be no negotiations with Russia,” he said.

Additionally, in relation to promoting membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which Russia used as a pretext for its invasion, he repeatedly confirmed his position as a full member by saying, “I signed the Fast Track application. “

Earlier, President Zelensky had warned that Russia “will close the door to dialogue if it holds a referendum.”

After the news of the territorial annexation agreement being signed, he said, “We cannot change the reality with a useless referendum.” “Our response will be very harsh.”

As a result, Ukraine intends to further tighten the reins of its territorial recovery offensive, which is currently underway across the front, regardless of the annexation agreement with Russia. On this day, they are preparing to advance on Luhansk with the recapture of Riemann, a key point in the north-east, at the forefront.

The West has also decided not to recognize Russia’s unilateral territorial annexation and has decided to further strengthen its support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

Immediately after the referendum, the United States announced plans to provide additional arms aid to Ukraine worth $1.1 billion.

He also defined the vote as “a clear violation of international law and the UN Charter,” and warned that additional sanctions would be imposed within days.

The European Union (EU) has decided to press for additional sanctions against Russia, including a ceiling on the price of Russian crude oil and an import restriction of 7 billion euros (about 9.7 trillion won).

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said: “Fake referenda or annexation of territory in Ukraine in any form is unacceptable.”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also stressed that NATO allies would not recognize the annexation of Russian territory.

Stoltenberg said, “We will not go to war, but we will strengthen our support for Ukraine.” Regarding Ukraine’s request for rapid accession to NATO, he stated his principled position that “new membership is decided by agreement of the 30 current members.”

President Vladimir Putin called for dialogue with Ukraine in his speech on the same day, but was also firm in his position to defend the newly annexed territories.

Russia has already amended its constitution in 2020, stating that “actions that separate parts of Russian territory or promote such actions are not allowed”.

This provision applies not only to Crimea which was annexed by Russia in 2014, but also to the provinces of Donetsk, Lugansk (Ukrainian name Luhansk), Zaporiza, and Kherson which signed the annexation agreement on that day.

On the other hand, since Ukraine has made it clear that it will restore all four of these states as well as Crimea, the intersection of the two sides has completely disappeared.

Russia issued a mobilization order even the day after the referendum timetable for territorial annexation was announced, showing its will to ‘go to the end’.

The day before, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Turkiye had a phone call with President Vladimir Putin asking for an additional opportunity to discuss the annexation of the territory, Turkey’s presidential office said.

However, the Kremlin did not reveal the fact that Erdogan asked for negotiations, only that Putin explained the results of the referendum.
