India’s Prime Minister Modi calls on G20 foreign ministers to unite

8:24 a.m.: India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on the foreign ministers of the G20 group of leading economic powers to unite against the background of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. One should not focus on matters that cannot be solved together – but on those that can be solved, Modi said at the beginning of the foreign ministers’ meeting on Thursday in a video address in the capital New Delhi. Ministers should address challenges such as growth, development, disaster resilience, financial stability, cross-border crime, and food and energy security.

Such issues also particularly affect the Global South, which India would like to address during its G20 presidency this year. But Modi also addressed “geopolitical tensions” where those present had different views. Host country India takes a neutral stance on the Russian war of aggression and has good relations with Western countries and Moscow. The recent G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Bengaluru, India, showed that the international community is anything but united on the issue of Ukraine. No joint final declaration was reached at this meeting.

Three dead in rocket attack in Zaporizhia

8.18 am: At least two people were killed in a Russian rocket attack on the city of Zaporizhia in southern Ukraine, according to the authorities. The rocket hit a five-story apartment building on Thursday night, which then collapsed, City Council Secretary Anatoly Kurtyev said on his Telegram channel. “According to the latest information, two people have died.” Eleven people were rescued alive from the rubble, including a pregnant woman. The information could not initially be verified by an independent party.

According to the authorities, the search and rescue work was still ongoing in the morning. It is feared that there could be other victims in the collapsed building. Zaporizhia is less than 50 kilometers from the front. In the past few months, the city has been repeatedly shelled with artillery and rockets by Russian troops. In September, Russia declared the Zaporizhia region annexed, although Russian forces have never controlled the region’s capital itself.

Baerbock to Lavrov: “Stop this war”

8.16 a.m.: At the G20 meeting of economic powers, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called on Russia to end the war of aggression against Ukraine. “Stop this war. Stop the violation of our international order. Stop the bombing of Ukrainian cities and civilians,” demanded the Green politician on Thursday at meetings of the G20 foreign ministers in India’s capital, New Delhi, according to information from delegation circles. She turned directly to Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“It is good that you are here in the hall to listen,” Baerbock said to the Russian minister. “Stop the war. Not in a month or a year, but today.” She added, “Because every family that loses a father, a brother, a mother, a child loses a whole world.” There is no right for the fittest to attack their little neighbors. At the G20 meeting last year, Lavrov left the group of foreign ministers so that he would not have to listen to criticism.

The most important thing from the night: Selenskyj sees control on fronts

5:28 a.m: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his video address that his troops had the situation on the fronts under control. Nevertheless, there are also reports of violent Russian attacks. A series of Russian artillery and air raids from around the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv was reported. The EU is apparently considering incentives for states that quickly deliver ammunition to Ukraine. Read our summary of the night here.
