UN Special Envoy on Myanmar leaves – MCOT Thai News Agency

United Nations, June 1 – Noeleen Heyzer, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Myanmar. He will resign after serving for 18 months when he was criticized by the Myanmar junta and the dissidents. While Myanmar is in political turmoil.

A spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, said Ms Heyzer would end her role as the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy to Myanmar on June 12, without giving a reason for her resignation. Mr Guterres thanked her for her efforts in the name of peace and the people of Myanmar, and said that a new special representative would be appointed later.

Heyzer is a sociologist from Singapore. Assigned by the UN Secretary General as a Special Representative in 2021 and to push Myanmar’s military junta to start a political dialogue with political dissidents. He visited Myanmar in August and met with Senior General Minh Aung Hlaing, the junta leader and other senior Myanmar army officers. This was an act condemned by human rights groups. But he did not get to meet Aung San Suu Kyi, who was detained after the Myanmar army staged a coup. Myanmar junta leaders later accused Heyser of issuing a unilateral statement based on what was discussed.-Thai News Agency
