Union Executive Sentenced to Prison After Defrauding Construction Workers of Millions

A construction workers’ union executive has been sentenced to prison for defrauding workers out of more than 70 million won. The Seoul Eastern District Court handed down a 10-month sentence to Mr. A, a branch manager of the Construction Union of the Korea Federation of Trade Unions, in his initial trial for violating the Act on Punishment, specifically for engaging in violence through collective blackmail.

Mr. A was arrested and charged in July after allegedly extorting 72 million won from 20 construction companies in the metropolitan area between December 2021 and November of last year. The investigation revealed that Mr. A demanded the hiring of union members as construction company officers under the guise of collective bargaining. He threatened to disrupt the construction process through rallies or demonstrations if his demands were not met.

This case highlights the abuse of power by union executives and the negative impact it can have on workers and businesses. The court’s ruling sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
