The University of Indonesia (UI) has achieved a significant global standing in the 2026 QS World University Rankings (QS WUR), securing the 189th position worldwide. This placement marks a notable ascent from its 2025 ranking, where it was positioned 206th globally and 8th in Southeast Asia.

The university has officially entered the ranks of the world’s top 200 universities, a milestone that reflects its ongoing efforts to transform into a world-class research institution. This progress is part of a broader trend in Indonesia, where 26 campuses have been recognized in the 2026 QS WUR.

Broad Subject Category Milestones

In a historic first for the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject, the University of Indonesia has successfully placed academic disciplines across all five broad subject categories. This represents an improvement over the previous year, during which the university’s disciplines only covered four broad subjects.

The five broad subject categories now featuring UI academic disciplines include:

  • Arts & Humanities
  • Social Sciences & Management
  • Engineering & Technology
  • Life Sciences & Medicine
  • Natural Sciences

UI Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah stated that this achievement demonstrates the university’s dominance at the national level and strengthens its position as a major force in Southeast Asia.

Strategic Growth and Global Influence

The university’s rise in the rankings is attributed to a synergy between faculty members, students, and administrative staff. Efforts have focused on driving impactful research, maintaining high-quality education, and contributing meaningful solutions to society.

To further accelerate its global influence, the university is implementing a strategy to drive more fields of study into the top three in Southeast Asia and eventually into the top 100 worldwide. This strategy relies on three primary pillars: strengthening research quality, expanding international collaboration, and increasing the volume of high-impact publications with global reach.

The next challenge is to accelerate the leap toward a group of universities with stronger global influence

The university has also focused on developing an adaptive curriculum to ensure graduates are prepared for science and technology advancements and the dynamics of the job market. This has been supported by continuous investment in human resource development and the recruitment of top talent from both domestic and international sources.

Regional Context and Comparisons

The 2026 rankings show a competitive landscape for Indonesian higher education. While UI has climbed to 189th globally, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) is ranked 224th in the world and 2nd within Indonesia according to the same 2026 QS World University Rankings.

UI’s current trajectory is viewed by its leadership as a targeted process rather than just a vision. By balancing specific excellence with an equitability of quality across disciplines, the university aims to solidify its foothold as a regional power in Southeast Asia while expanding its international presence through strategic collaborations with top-tier research institutions.
