(Los Angeles = Yonhap News) Correspondent Yoon-Seop Jeong = One passenger refused to wear a mask on the plane, causing an uproar in which an American Airlines plane carrying 140 people turned back over the Atlantic Ocean.

According to the New York Times (NYT), an American daily, it was reported on the 20th (local time) that a flight from Miami, USA to London, England returned to Miami during the flight due to a ‘no mask’ passenger problem.

The airliner, carrying 129 passengers and 14 crew members, reversed course on the night of the 19th while flying over the Atlantic Ocean, 805 kilometers off the coast of North Carolina.

This is because one female passenger in her 40s refused to wear a mask on board.

American Airlines said in a statement that “the flight was diverted because of a customer who did not comply with federal mask requirements.”

According to flight tracking site FlightAware, the plane landed again at Miami Airport 1 hour and 48 minutes after departure.

After disembarking at the airport, the passenger in question was handed over to the police, but was not arrested.

American Airlines is said to have taken steps to report the passenger to aviation authorities.

According to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), less than a month has passed since this year, but as of the 18th, there were 151 cases of passengers reporting disturbances on board, 92 of which were due to mask problems.

Since the beginning of last year, the FAA has imposed a ‘zero tolerance’, which can impose fines of up to $35,000 (about 42 million won) since the beginning of last year, as the number of passengers refusing to wear masks after the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) pandemic has increased. ‘ The policy is being implemented.
