Islamabad ∙ An American engineer held captive by the Taliban for 2 years was released. This is in exchange for the release of a Taliban member held by the US.

There are reports that Bashir Noorzai, the leader of the drug gang in Afghanistan and a member of the Taliban, has been imprisoned by the United States for 17 years. The Taliban’s Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, said he was in Guantanamo prison in the United States. Nurzai also attended the press conference held by Muttaki in Kabul.

US contractor and former Marine Mark Frericks was kidnapped on January 31, 2020 in Afghanistan. Earlier this year, the Taliban released a video of Frericks pleading with the US government to intervene to free him. His family confirmed his release, but the US government has not responded. US efforts to free Frericks as he left Afghanistan were unsuccessful. The Taliban also released a video of Nurzai landing in Kabul.
