US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific to visit Korea next week… Pay attention to discuss bold ideas or not

State Department “Strengthening the ROK-US Alliance and Discussing the North Korean Threat… Emphasis on South Korea-US-Japan Cooperation”

The State Department announced on the 19th (local time) that US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Crettenbrink, who is in charge of the East Asia and Pacific region, including Korea, will visit Korea and Mongolia from the 22nd to’ r 27th.

Assistant Secretary Crettenbrink will meet with government officials in Seoul to discuss strengthening the ROK-US alliance, the State Department said.

They also exchanged views on cooperation on a wide range of regional and global issues, including the North Korean threat and Russia’s unjust and brutal war.

The State Department also mentioned that “Secretary Secretary Crettenbrink will also emphasize the importance of trilateral cooperation between South Korea, the United States and Japan during this visit.”

Deputy Secretary Crettenbrink’s visit to Korea took place immediately after President Yun Seok-yeol announced the ‘Bold Initiative’, the Yun Seok-yeol administration’s road map for North Korea’s nuclear weapons, in his congratulatory speech on the 15th .

The aim of the bold initiative is to seek an exemption from sanctions against North Korea through a resource exchange program from the start of the negotiations if North Korea participates in denuclearization talks with sincerity.

The United States has also expressed support for this, but North Korea has refused to say the least.

This visit is also during the US-ROK joint exercise ‘Eulji Freedom Shield’ (UFS), which will take effect from the 22nd, so attention is focused on what kind of response the North Korea will take it.

Deputy Secretary Crettenbrink visited Korea in November last year to discuss current issues between the two countries, including the issue of North Korea, and followed President Joe Biden’s visit to Korea in May.

He had visited Japan last month.

Prior to the visit to South Korea, Assistant Secretary Krittenbrink will visit Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to attend annual bilateral consultations to discuss continued cooperation and common interests between the two countries.
