US citizen dies in drone strike in Syria

According to the Pentagon, a US citizen died in an attack on a military base in Syria and six other people were injured. The US military has already responded.

A US citizen has been killed in a drone attack on a military base in northern Syria, according to the US Department of Defense. The attack took place on Thursday (local time) on a military base near the city of Al-Hassaka in the northeast of the civil war country, the Pentagon said.

According to the intelligence services, the drone is of “Iranian origin”. The dead man was an employee of a company that works on behalf of the US military, it said. Five US soldiers and another US company employee were injured in the attack.

Lloyd: “No group may attack our troops with impunity”

The US military responded with several airstrikes on Thursday evening. The target was facilities of groups in eastern Syria “that are in contact with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards,” said Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. These “precision strikes” are intended to protect and defend US troops. “No group can attack our troops with impunity,” Austin said.

The US military is deployed in Syria in areas controlled by the Kurdish militia YPG and its allies. The American armed forces are supporting their fight against the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS). Alongside Russia, Iran is Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s most important ally in the civil war.
