(Shanghai = Yonhap News) Correspondent Cha Dae-woon = An American warship passed through the Taiwan Strait on the 23rd.

The US Pacific Fleet said in a press release posted on its website on the 23rd (local time) that the Milius (DDG 69), an Arleigh Burke-class missile destroyer belonging to the 7th Fleet, normally passed through the high seas in the Taiwan Strait in accordance with international law.

The Pacific Fleet said, “The passage of that ship (Millius) through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.” added.

This is the first time a US warship has passed through the Taiwan Strait since the US-China summit on the 16th (China time).

At the first summit between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Taiwan issue was one of the most acute issues on the agenda.

China regards the Taiwan Strait as its ‘offshore’ and reacts sensitively to the passage of foreign warships such as the United States.

The Taiwan Strait, located between China and Taiwan, is only 130 km wide at its narrowest point.

In the past, US warships passed through the Taiwan Strait only once a year, but since the time of former President Donald Trump, it has become a de facto monthly event, and the Biden administration has succeeded to this principle.
