A two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran is facing significant strain following a series of deadly Israeli military strikes in Lebanon and ongoing disputes regarding the status of the Strait of Hormuz. The tension has led Vice President JD Vance to warn Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel must check themselves to avoid derailing the fragile truce.

The ceasefire, announced by President Donald Trump, was made contingent on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, the agreement has been complicated by a lack of consensus over whether the pause in hostilities extends to Lebanon. While Iran and Pakistan, which brokered the deal on April 8, 2026, maintain that the ceasefire includes Lebanon, both the White House and Israel have denied this claim.

Israeli Strikes in Lebanon

On April 8, 2026, Israel conducted what local authorities described as the deadliest single day of strikes in Lebanon since the start of the conflict. The military offensive targeted Hezbollah, a Tehran-backed group. According to report from local authorities, the strikes killed between 180 and 260 people and left approximately 1,000 others wounded.

Conflicting figures were provided by Lebanese official agencies. The country’s health ministry reported 182 deaths, while the civil defense service reported 254 deaths.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that there is no ceasefire currently in place in Lebanon. He indicated that Israel intends to continue its war against Hezbollah and has instructed his government to open direct negotiations with Lebanon. Netanyahu specified that Israel’s goals for these negotiations include the disarmament of Hezbollah and the establishment of peaceful relations.

Lebanese officials have responded by stating that Beirut has not received a formal invitation for such talks. One official insisted that there would be no negotiations under fire while Israeli strikes continue.

The Strait of Hormuz Dispute

The status of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping lane, remains a primary point of contention. Iranian state media reported on April 8, 2026, that the country had closed the strait in response to the Israeli bombardments in Lebanon.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the Iranian claims of closure false but reiterated the demand from President Trump that the trade route be reopened immediately, quickly and safely. President Trump has also warned Iran against attempting to charge tolls to oil tankers passing through the waterway.

Despite the White House’s denial of a total closure, the oil chief of Abu Dhabi stated that the strait is not open because very few vessels are currently making it through the waterway.

Diplomatic Efforts and International Response

In an effort to secure a long-term deal with Iran, a high-level U.S. Delegation is scheduled to lead in-person peace talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, during the weekend of April 11-12, 2026. Vice President JD Vance will lead the negotiations, accompanied by U.S. Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Other international actors are also engaging with Tehran to mitigate the impact of the conflict on global trade. South Korea announced on April 10, 2026, that it would send a special envoy to Iran to discuss the safe passage of South Korean vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

The South Korean foreign ministry appointed Chung Byung-ha as the special envoy. Chung is the current representative for polar cooperation and a former ambassador to Kuwait. His appointment followed a phone call on April 9, 2026, between South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

While a two-week pause in hostilities between the U.S. And Iran appears to be largely holding, the ongoing Israeli offensive against Hezbollah continues to serve as a critical sticking point that threatens the stability of the broader diplomatic agreement.
