Federal and local governments: “It’s okay to get vaccinated”
Expert “Reinforcement of public commons”
Controversy is rekindling in the US over stricter guidelines for wearing masks in public. This is because the re-spreading trend of COVID-19 is confirmed, with new confirmed cases increasing noticeably while the vaccination rate has been stagnant. While federal and local governments have maintained that people who have been vaccinated are not required to wear a mask, some experts are calling for reinforcing the guidelines for wearing masks in public places, which the federal health authorities de facto lifted in May.
White House press secretary Jen Saki said at a regular briefing on the 22nd (local time) when asked if they were considering changing guidelines to require people who have been vaccinated to wear a face mask in public, saying, “We’re talking about how to deal with the virus. We are in regular contact and meeting with public health officials, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).”
US media recently reported that White House officials are debating whether or not the mask-wearing guidelines should be tightened. It is said that the CDC recommends that people who have been vaccinated wear a mask when going to shopping malls or theaters are being considered.
The CDC announced on May 13 that people who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 do not need to wear a mask indoors or outdoors. However, the situation has changed now, two months after the declaration of the lifting of the mask wearing. President Joe Biden promised to vaccinate 70% of adults at least once by July 4. Moreover, delta mutations are spreading rapidly among unvaccinated people.
As the trend of re-spreading of COVID-19 became clear, the awareness of American citizens increased. The Hill, a political media outlet, reported that in a poll conducted on the 16th and 17th of 957 registered voters, 74% of respondents said they agreed to strengthen the guidelines for wearing masks if the number of COVID-19 in their area increases.
However, both local and federal governments appear to be hesitant to tighten up mask wearing guidelines. Last year, when strong quarantine guidelines were prolonged in Michigan, protesters held a protest with guns and broke into the state capitol.
Los Angeles, California, has re-mandatory wearing of face masks in public, whether or not vaccinated, as the trend of re-spreading is clear. However, security officials said they would not crack down on anyone who violates the guidelines, saying there is no scientific basis.
