The Xinhua news agency reported, citing data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), that the number of confirmed cases of monkeypox nationwide reached nearly 24,000 on Monday.

The center said California currently has the highest number of monkeypox cases at 4,656, followed by New York at 3,755 and Florida at 2,398.

US health officials have warned doctors not to rely too much on one drug to treat chicken pox. This is because the virus usually mutates continuously to infect humans. It can better overcome new drugs and vaccines.

The US Food and Drug Administration warned that antiviral drug tecovirimat (tecovirimat) high risk of developing drug resistance. Even a small mutation in the virus can make the drug ineffective.
