(Washington = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Sang-heon = A tsunami warning has been issued for the entire west coast of the United States due to a volcanic eruption near the South Pacific island country of Tonga.

According to foreign media such as CNN and AFP on the 15th (local time), the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tsunami warning for the west coast of the United States, including California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska on the same day.

The tsunami caused minor levels of coastal flooding in Hawaii, the NWS reported.

The NWS warns that a tsunami heading to the west coast can be as high as 2 feet (61 centimeters) high, and that strong rip currents and coastal flooding are expected.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami is currently being observed.

Earlier, the Tongan authorities issued a tsunami warning for the entire country after a volcano erupted 65 km north of the capital Nuku’alopa on the same day.
