Months before the attack on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, several secret services knew of Ukrainian plans. This comes from a media report.
According to a media report, the US had detailed Ukrainian plans for an attack on the gas pipelines three months before the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines. As the “Washington Post” reported on Tuesday, citing leaked information on Discord, the details of the plan were compiled by a European secret service and handed over to the US CIA in June 2022.
The original report was based on information that came from a person in Ukraine. After the source was confirmed, the CIA also shared the information with Germany and other European countries last June. The federal government is said to have been informed about the plans at the end of June, the Washington Post quotes a person who knew of a corresponding meeting.
The Ukrainian source was able to report in detail on the plans, it said. Accordingly, the Ukrainian military is said to have planned an attack with a small group of divers. You should contact directly Valeriy Zalushnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, report. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could have denied knowledge of the attack at any time. A possible outcry among the population, including Germans, was feared if it became known that Zelenskyj had approved the attack on civilian targets.
BND: Notes “in all possible directions”
But things turned out differently: the operation was put on hold for unknown reasons. However, elements of it matched the results of the previous investigation into the attack that actually took place in September 2022.
A statement from Ukraine, Russia, the CIA and the USA on the report was initially not available. BND boss Bruno Kahl had dampened hopes of a quick clarification in May and said there were indications “in all possible directions”. Various media had previously reported that apparently several new tracks led in the direction of Ukraine.
Russia had pumped natural gas from Siberia to Germany and other European countries through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline until the delivery stop. Nord Stream 2 was not commissioned because of the Russian attack on Ukraine. The two twin tubes were damaged by explosions in September 2022. It remains uncertain whether this actually happened as a result of the Ukrainian plans that have now become known.
