Hana Andělová worked on the Questions of Václav Moravec team for around fifteen years. As the main dramatist of the program, she is one of its key people. Czech Television is now removing her from the program and moving her to another position, as reported by the aktuálně.cz server.
“The Director of the News and Public Affairs Division, Petr Mrzena, informed me today that I will no longer be the dramatist for Questions of Václav Moravec from next week. the reasons are obvious. I will remain with the Fokus program,” Andělová told the server.
Czech Television spokesman Michal Pleskot said that Andělová will work as a dramatist for other programs within the news and public affairs editorial staff. According to the spokesman, the reason for her transfer is that she “repeatedly spoke out at meetings in contradiction to the principle of equal access.”
Czech Public Broadcaster Faces Potential Strike Over Editorial Concerns
Czech Television journalist Martin Kubal expressed deep pessimism about resolving disagreements with management, suggesting a potential strike looms if concerns over editorial independence aren’t addressed. He described a recent exchange with director general Jana Maláčová as a stark warning of an impending crisis.
“I responded by saying I hoped our debates would contribute to finding some common ground. My response to Hana [Maláčová] was that I felt our tracks would run parallel and never get closer by an inch until we hit a wall,” Kubal stated.
The dispute centers on what journalists perceive as increasing political interference in the public broadcaster’s editorial decisions. Kubal and others fear a weakening of autonomous journalism within Czech Television.
This isn’t the first time concerns have been raised. kubal previously discussed the situation in a podcast interview with Seznam Zpravy, outlining the network’s commitment to defending free journalism and hinting at the possibility of industrial action.
- The Core Issue: Journalists allege political pressure on editorial content.
- Potential Action: A strike is being considered if disagreements aren’t resolved.
- Previous Discussion: Kubal detailed the concerns in a recent podcast.
The situation remains fluid, and further negotiations are expected. The outcome will likely have important implications for the future of public service broadcasting in the Czech Republic.
