Venezuela’s El Sistema breaks record for world’s largest classical performance

The Guinness Book of Records for the world’s largest orchestra has been broken.

The Venezuelan government announced on the 20th that the orchestra performance that challenged the country to break the record on the 13th was officially recognized as a new record in the Guinness Book of Records. At that time, 12,000 performers aged 12 to 77 gathered in one place in the capital of Caracas to play Tchaikovsky’s ‘Slavic March’, and 260 judges judged that 8573 of them participated effectively. This is more than the previous Guinness record of 8097 simultaneous performances in Russia in 2019.

The world-famous musicians from ‘El Sistema’ of Venezuela participated in this record breaking. ‘El Sistema’ is Spanish for ‘system’, and it is a Venezuelan music education system that pursues social change by teaching free music to children and adolescents from the poor.

It is widely known as the ‘miracle orchestra’ that helps children overcome poverty and violence and dream of a better future through music. . Elsistema manager Eduardo Mendes said, “This record breaking is a great achievement not only for El Sistema but also for Venezuela as a whole.”
