The number of births in the third quarter of this year was at an all-time low.

According to Statistics Korea on the 24th, the number of births in the third quarter of this year was 66,563, down 2337 from a year ago. This is the smallest number since 1981, when related statistics began to be compiled.

The number of babies born in September was 21,920, down 6.7% from the previous year. The number of monthly births has been declining for 70 consecutive months since December 2015.

In addition, the total fertility rate, which is the number of children a woman of childbearing age is expected to have in her lifetime, was 0.82 in the third quarter, down by 0.02 from a year ago.

This year, the total fertility rate was 0.88 in the first quarter, 0.82 in the second quarter, and 0.82 in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, the number of marriages in the third quarter was 44,192, down 6.8% from a year ago. It is also the lowest level since statistics were compiled.
