Vijay Babu | Disclosure of the name of the complainant; Vijay Babu’s controversial video withdrawn

Actor and producer Vijay Babu has deleted a live video shared on Facebook revealing the name of the complainant in the rape case. Vijay Babu came on Facebook last night after the complainant came to him with allegations of torture and then the police took up the case.

Vijay Babu had said that he was the victim and therefore the name of the complainant was being revealed. The content of the video was that Vijay Babu, who revealed the name of the complainant, was ready to face legal action against him. Vijay Babu had said in the video that one should be afraid only if one has done something wrong and that the victim is really himself and the other party is happy when his family and loved ones are suffering.

Following the release of the video, Vijay Babu came under fire. The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) and others came out to condemn Vijay Babu’s action. The WCC stated in a Facebook post that publicly insulting the complainant by a defendant was reprehensible and punishable by law. Anyone has the right to formally report a crime against themselves to the police. The judiciary has the right to decide who the victim is.

The WCC pointed out that expressing one’s presence online through such an act, without submitting oneself to the judicial process, is an attempt to mock the judicial system.

Vijay Babu shared this video on Facebook to argue that he is innocent, but it turned out to be a setback for the actor himself. Under the Indian Penal Code, disclosing the names of victims of sexual assault is a punishable offense. The police had stated that the case would be registered. The video then disappeared. However, it is not clear whether the video was removed by Vijay Babu or Facebook.

The actress had lodged a complaint with the police against Vijay Babu on the 22nd. The case is being framed under the provisions of Rape and Serious Injury. He was allegedly raped several times in his flat in Kochi after promising to give him a chance in a movie. Vijay Babu is likely to be arrested in connection with a case involving serious crimes.
