Virat Kohli | Kohli is in trouble! Will not play in South Africa under Rohit, reports say

Rohit Sharma has been named the new ODI captain of Team India, replacing Virat Kohli. The All India Senior Selection Committee has announced Rohit Sharma as the new captain of Team India in ODIs. Now, it is reported that Virat Kohli is unhappy with his removal from the ODI captaincy.

He will miss the ODI series against South Africa in January. The Telegraph reports.

If Kohli stays out of the series, it is likely to intensify the battle between him and the BCCI. If that happens, it could even lead to Kohli’s dismissal from the team.

India are playing a three-match ODI series in South Africa. The tour starts with a Test series on December 26. India will play Kohli in the Test series. An 18-member team has also been announced. But the squad for the ODI series has not been announced.

It was reported that the BCCI had given Virat Kohli 48 hours to announce his resignation as ODI captain. However, Kohli was not ready for this and in the 49th hour, the BCCI announced Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain, PTI reported.

Kohli will be India’s only captain in Test cricket. The BCCI has announced Rohit as the vice-captain to replace Ajinkya Rahane in the Tests. Earlier in the T20I, Rohit Sharma replaced Virat Kohli as India’s captain. But at that time the selection committee had not officially announced him as the T20 captain. The BCCI has just announced the announcement of Rohit Sharma as the permanent captain of limited-overs cricket.

Kohli has already expressed his interest in leading India to the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, BCCI sources said that Kohli would be removed from the captaincy if India did not perform well in the Twenty20 World Cup. Kohli’s captaincy in white ball cricket was shaken when India were knocked out of the T20 World Cup semi-finals.

With the departure of the captain, the assessment that Kohli will excel in batting is also strong. Many former players are of the opinion that Kohli can be expected to perform similarly to Sachin Tendulkar after stepping down as captain.
