Virat Kohli to step down as India’s limited-overs captain New captain Rohit Sharma; Report

Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli will step down as the team’s limited-overs captain and his current deputy, Rohit Sharma, will take over. The announcement comes after this year’s T20 World Cup.

The Times of India has now reported that Virat is stepping down from limited overs cricket to focus more on batting and has decided to share leadership responsibilities with Rohit.

According to the Times of India, Kohli has been in talks with Rohit and the Indian team management for a long time to step down as captain of the ODI and T20 teams. BCCI sources told the Times of India that Kohli had decided to step down as captain as he wanted to be the best batsman of all time and would have to focus more on batting.

For eight long years, India have not won any major trophy in the ICC. India last won the Champions Trophy in 2013 under Dhoni. Although he has yet to win any major ICC trophies, Virat Kohli is India’s most prolific Test captain. Kohli will take over the captaincy after Dhoni retired from Test cricket in 2015. In 2017, Dhoni will change his captaincy to Kohli in fixed-over cricket.

Kohli has not scored a century in a long time. Kohli, who was once forgotten for scoring consecutive centuries, is now turning into a century cricketer. Strictly speaking, not a single century has been born on Kohli’s account since 2019. Despite being able to score high scores through consistent performances, he often fails to complete a century. The star is unable to make half-centuries into centuries. He has scored 70 centuries in international cricket so far.

There are opinions that when it comes to split captaincy, it will be good and bad for the Indian team. While split captaincy is effective in teams like England and Australia, it is likely to have an adverse effect on the context and culture of the Indian team. But the outcome of this T20 World Cup will be decisive. If such a good team fails to win the title, there will be a lot of criticism against Kohli. With a talented captain like Rohit in the squad, Kohli may have to step down.
