Mihai Șora, Romanian philosopher and essayist, passed away, Saturday, at the age of 106. The death was announced on his Facebook account.

The writer Mircea Cărtărescu reacted with a message upon learning the news: “Mihai Șora is no more. Rest in peace”.

The news also saddened the actress Oana Pellea: “Goodbye, my Lord. Have a good trip, Mr. Mihai ȘORA”, she wrote.

For her part, Maia Sandu, the president of the Republic of Moldova wrote: “Mihai Sora is no longer with us. Mihai Șora told us to be good and left us so much wisdom that it will always be part of us. “Dear children, I wish you to enter the new year with joy and wisdom (the two always go together). I am one of those who believe in the power of good: discreet, but sure, authentic and steadfast good, without trumpets from the pulpit; the good that is neither a medal to hang on the chest, nor a crown or an occasion for pride: the common good. Be good.” (Mihai Șora, December 31, 2021)”.

Ligia Deca, Minister of Education: “Today, we live the separation from Mihai Şora, the one who made us believe in the future through the youth of his spirit. Always open to new things, to progress, the first Minister of Education after the Revolution represented a landmark of moral and intellectual dignity, resigning as a sign of protest against the Mineriada of 1990 and its crimes against those considered intellectuals. Bertolt Brecht said that ‘People who fight can lose. People who don’t fight have already lost’. Thank you, Mihai Şora, for knowing not to lose, not giving up fighting permanently for all of us, in such an elegant and discreet way”.

Dominic Fritz, the mayor of Timisoara: “Mihai Șora, that great Timișoara, has left. His good humor, tenacious endurance, inexhaustible vitality and stubbornness to not give up on principles remained. His connection with Timișoara lasted a lifetime: he went to school here, from 1927 (!) to his beloved Loga high school, he felt at home here and returned here whenever he had the opportunity. Mihai Șora was an inspiration for generations of Romanians, he balanced rebellion with hope, generosity with determination, wisdom with fun. We will remain a guiding beacon in Timișoara, Romania and Europe. Smooth ride!”

Clotilde Armand, mayor of sector 1: “After the 2016 elections, I felt a man next to me who gave me the impetus to not give up the fight no matter what happens. It was summer, it was in University Square. It was “me and you and him and her”. Thank you for everything Mihai ŞORA. God rest his soul”.
