“We wrote history”… ‘Joint gold medal’ after 109 years

In yesterday’s (1st) high jump, when Woo Sang-hyuk set a new Korean record, a joint gold medal came out for the first time in 109 years. Two friends who failed at the same height chose friendship over competition.

Shin Jeong-eun is a reporter.

After the world championship winner Mutaz Essa Bashim of Qatar easily crossed 2m 37, which is 2cm taller than Woo Sang-hyuk, he jumped up with determination and set the same record with the cast that Italy’s Jean Marco Tembery had done at the time of an ankle injury.

The two runners, who are close friends, failed both the 2m 39 challenge and maintained their tie for first place.

When the referee proposes a ‘final match’ and ‘jump off’ to determine the winner by ascending and descending in height,

Bashim, the world’s No. 1 player who objectively has a strong chance of winning, announced that he would no longer compete with his friend, and Temberry was thrilled and sobbed.

The moment the joint gold medal was born after 109 years, cries of congratulations erupted.

In the final lap of the men’s 800m semi-final, two runners tangle and fall.

When Eisier Juitt of the United States, who was ahead, tripped and fell, even Nigel Amos of Botswana, who was following him, fell.

The two runners, who were stunned, stood side by side, held each other’s hands, and ran slowly to finish the race, ending an impressive race.

Fortunately, Amos was admitted to be caught in Juitt’s foot and made it to the finals.
