So far, four finalists have been selected. These great previews will be joined by three others for Wednesday night’s finale. One outstanding dog will receive a Best in Show award.
Now go to the dog! WKC accepts 211 different dog breeds. And the whole point of the competition is to find a dog that complies with the most breed standards. Each of the show’s finalists represented seven different dog breed groups: herding, hunting, non-sporting, terrier, toy and working. The finals may vary in size. Two virtues tie them together: They are all very good at being a type of dog, and they all have great names.
Bloodhound is “One of the oldest dog breeds to hunt by scent,” according to the Westminster Kennel Club classification, a discovery made by a highly trained hound can be used in court! The American Kennel Club describes the ideal hound’s expression as: “Honorable and dignified and characterized by solemnity, intelligence, and power.” The trumpet nailed it.
Non-Sports Group: Winston (French Bulldogs)
Ah, Winston, a classic French bulldog name for classic men. According to the WKC, the French don’t have many practical skills. But they compensate with their cuteness. “Most French Bulldogs excel at being friendly with loving clowns and have reason to be admired,” says their breed description. Winston’s has definitely taken him a long way. (One of Winston’s owners is the NFL’s defensive lineman! That’s a skill for him, right?)
Toy group: Hollywood (Malta)
Hollywood looks like she thinks she’s better than everyone else. and you’re right Toy dogs were bred for human companionship and luxury. WKC’s Maltese breed description says they have been popular pets among royals for centuries because of their “elegance and beauty.” Beat several beautiful toys, including a Porsche. Shepherd Group: River (German Shepherd)
German Shepherds are a favorite among herding groups. And it’s easy to see why. They are not only smart and active. However, the WKC points out that they are also family friendly and excellent service dogs. A German shepherd named Rumor won WKC’s Best in Show in 2017. Can Rivers compete again?
Wednesday night will judge the finalists from the Terrier, Hunting and Working Group, but only one of the final seven can be the top dog!
