What happens when you get hit twice with AZ and boost shots with Pfizer… Should I get an Omicron?

[이데일리 이선영 기자] A study found that the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine had a preventive effect on omicron and delta mutations. In particular, when AstraZeneca (AZ) and Pfizer vaccine were cross-vaccinated, Omicron’s defense increased the most.

On the 20th, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Health, Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) announced that as a result of a survey of 35 people who were vaccinated against COVID-19 aged 20-59 in Korea, the ability to neutralize Omicron mutation was found to increase 2-3 weeks after the third dose. .

The group with the highest increase in Omicron neutralizing antibody after the third inoculation was 15 patients who received the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine in the 1st and 2nd doses and then received the 3rd inoculation with Pfizer vaccine. After the third vaccination, the neutralizing antibody was 28.9 times higher than when the second vaccination was completed. If neutralizing antibodies increase and the neutralizing ability increases, the defense against the virus can also increase.

The neutralizing antibody titer against Omicron mutation in 10 patients who received the first dose with AstraZeneca vaccine and the second and third doses with Pfizer vaccine increased by 10.5 times, and 10 patients who received three doses of Pfizer vaccine increased by 17 times.

The third vaccination was found to have a greater preventive effect against delta mutations and non-mutations. In 10 people who received the first dose with the AstraZeneca vaccine and the second and third doses with the Pfizer vaccine, the neutralizing antibody titer to the delta mutation increased by 14.3 times, and the antibody titer to the non-mutation increased by 9.9 times.

In 10 patients who received three doses of Pfizer vaccine, the neutralizing antibody titer to the delta mutation increased 21-fold, and the antibody titer to the non-mutant increased 7.8-fold.

According to the results of this investigation, which showed that the third inoculation significantly increased the neutralizing ability against omicron and delta mutant viruses, the quarantine authorities believe that the tertiary inoculation will also contribute to the increase in defense against mutated viruses.

Kwon Jun-wook, the 2nd deputy head of the Central Quarantine Countermeasures Headquarters, said, “It is the result of confirming once again that an early third vaccination can be a powerful defense weapon above all else at a time when the Omicron mutation is spreading rapidly.”

However, this study has limitations in that only 35 people were surveyed, and those over the age of 60, who are considered vulnerable to infection, were not included.

Director Kwon, at a briefing on the same day, said, “If the sample size is large, meaningful results will come out, but at present, the need for rapid analysis is greater, so the neutralization ability was judged as soon as the research subjects were secured.” answered.
