Valve announced on April 29 that it will hold a sale event on Steam, “Rogue: Indomitable Celebration,” from May 2nd to 9th (Pacific Time). This sale will target roguelike games and roguelike games. It’s a familiar genre, but some people may find it confusing as to what kind of work it specifically refers to and what the differences are. That’s where Valve explains.

『Rogue』

Roguelike is a genre that shows the elements of the 1980 dungeon crawl RPG “Rogue”, which means “like a rogue”. One of the strict definitions is the “Berlin Interpretation” presented at the 2008 International Roguelike Development Conference, which is as follows:

・ Random map generation
・ Permadeath
・ Turn-based combat
・ Grid movement
・ Complexity that allows multiple strategies
-Non-modal (all actions can be performed at any time)
・Resource management
・ Hack and Slash Combat

It’s safe to say that a game that has all of this is a roguelike game. However, in games that are actually sold, it is often called a roguelike game by introducing only some elements. For example, maps are randomly generated, but items can be carried over even if they die. While there are pros and cons to calling these works roguelike, roguelike was created by categorizing works that incorporate roguelike elements into the light (loosely).

Valve says that while more and more games these days are strictly roguelikes, roguelikes are often used as a comprehensive term. He also mentioned that the company loves everything equally. It doesn’t seem to require developers to have a strict genre. As a matter of fact, how to distinguish roguelikes from roguelikes depends on the developer and the user. However, since there are many games of this genre even with Steam tags, it is meaningful that Valve expressed commentary and stance.

Roguelike action “Rogue Legacy 2” was officially released today on April 29th.

It seems that the sale to be held this time will also cover soul-like games and Metroidvania games. Soul-like originates from “Demon’s Souls” and “Dark Souls”, and Metroidvania is a work that combines the elements of “Metroid” and “Akumajo Dracula”. Like roguelikes, it’s a genre that originated in a particular game, and Valve briefly describes these components. For details, please refer to the relevant blog page.

The sale event “Rogue: Indomitable Festival” on Steam will be held from May 2nd to 9th (Pacific time). Since the target titles are already posted on the special page, it is a good idea to put the works you are interested in in the wish list.
