Britney Spears’ single Toxic # 1 was originally meant for Janet Jackson and has been revealed.
In a recently publicized interview on the Ivors Academy website with Cathy Dennis, the acclaimed singer-songwriter and producer confirmed that the 2004 smash hit was written specifically for Janet.
“It was written in Sweden with [Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg] and Henrik Jonback. I went there to write with Janet Jackson in mind, ”Dennis explained.
“I’ve been there for about ten days in total. I had a meeting with Janet, I think in London, but it may have been in New York. I thought I’d try to write something that worked for her. ”

Dennis explained that while the song was intended for Janet, it remained unfinished during the writing camp, with a trio of other tracks being completed.
“We had this Toxic song, though,” Dennis continued. “It started on the first day out of seven … then it took me part of the second day to try to finish it. And since I couldn’t finish it, I said, ‘Look, let’s start with something else.’ So we wrote three more songs that week and in my spare time while I was in my hotel room I was very busy editing my lyrics on Toxic. Eventually on the seventh day, which was the day I was returning to England, I had run out of time. “
Janet began working with Cathy Dennis on Damita Jo’s album track Island Life, while Toxic was later abandoned by Kylie Minogue, with whom Cathy had worked on Can’t Get You Out of My Head.
Eventually, Toxic ended up with Britney, giving her her first UK number 1 single in four years, selling 458,000 copies and racking up 72.7 million streams as of October 2020.
