[월드&포토] Whole freight train theft in LA… Sweep away courier products

Breaking locks on containers and looting… Thousands of discarded boxes are scattered

(Los Angeles = Yonhap News) Correspondent Yoon-seop Jeong = The theft of a freight train that you’d only see in an American western movie occurred in Los Angeles (LA).

Local broadcaster CBS LA reported on the looting of a freight train in downtown Los Angeles on the 14th (local time).

Thieves broke into a railroad track that crossed Lincoln Heights, a densely populated area, and swept away all kinds of parcels on a container freight train.

The robbers targeted the freight trains of the American railroad company Union Pacific.

The site of the incident is one of the L.A. freight centers, which is adjacent to Union Pacific Terminal and the logistics company UPS Customer Center.

The area around the railroad swept away by thieves became a mess.

Items ordered through the online shopper Amazon and packages delivered by UPS disappeared in an instant, leaving only thousands of empty boxes thrown away by the thieves.

Traces of opening a box containing quarantine and medical supplies, such as a novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) diagnostic kit and epinephrine syringe, were also found.

CBS LA said the Union Pacific container train was a target for theft because the security was so poor that the locks could be easily broken.

The section where the container train is parked is also out of the reach of police surveillance, as Union Pacific security guards are usually on the lookout.

In LA, gangs of thieves targeting shopping and luxury stores have been on the rise since the end of last year, and there are also analyzes that the robbers have targeted freight trains with loose surveillance as looting targets.

Union Pacific said in a statement that it was “very concerned” about the recent rise in freight train thefts, saying it would increase its special patrol force and work with police to prevent looting.
