Women’s handball ‘Myeongga’ Samcheok City Hall wins the first integrated championship in 9 years

Samcheok City Hall, the ‘myeongga’ of women’s handball, is one step closer to winning the women’s handball Korea League combined championship for the first time in 9 years.

The Samcheok City Hall Women’s Handball Team, led by coach Lee Gye-cheong, defeated the Gwangju Metropolitan Government 22-17 in the women’s first leg of the 2021-2022 SK Handball Korea League Championship held at the Bitgoeul Gymnasium in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do on the 29th. Samcheok City Hall, which won by 5 goals, was moved to Samcheok Citizen’s Gymnasium on the 31st and was able to win the championship game even if they lost by 4 goals or less in the second game. On the other hand, Gwangju City Corporation has to win the second game by a 6 or more goal difference and win by 5 goals to continue their hope of winning the championship through the 7m throw. In the championship match, the winner of the first and second rounds is determined entirely, and if the record is the same, the winning team is decided in the order of goal difference-toss.

Samcheok City Hall announced the ‘green light’ of the handball Korea League women’s combined championship with a grand away win in the first game on that day. Samcheok City Hall finished first in the regular season this season. This is the chance to win the championship for the first time in 9 years. 2013 is the first and last time Samcheok City Hall won both the regular league and the championship. Samcheok City Hall finished second in the regular league last season, and in the championship game, they lost to the Busan Facilities Corporation and only finished runners-up.

Samcheok City Hall took the lead with 11 goals in the first half alone. Only six goals were conceded to Gwangju City Corporation. Samcheok City Hall, who took the lead in the first half 11-6, quickly increased momentum from the beginning of the second half, leading by 7 points. Until the last minute of the game, Gwangju City Corporation worked hard to come back, but they did not give up the lead until the end and won by five goals. At Samcheok City Hall, Hyo-jin Lee scored 5 goals and 6 assists, and goalkeeper Mi-ra Park kept the goal down with an ERA of 52% (13/25) and played an active part as a ‘twin’.

Samcheok City Hall, which gained an advantage by winning the first round, will start the final match to determine the champion at the Samcheok Citizens’ Gymnasium at ‘Anbang’ at 6 pm on the 31st. Manager Lee Gye-cheong said in a telephone interview with The Times on the 30th before the second game, “I came up to the throne after a long time, and I won the first game by 5 goals, so I think it’s a really good opportunity.” We will repay the support of the citizens and fans by winning the championship.” Seunghwan Jeong
