Won the Olympics venue by paying bribes; Rio Olympics committee chairman jailed for 30 years

Sao Paulo (Brazil) കോടതി Carlos Arthur Nusman, head of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for bribing and influencing high-ranking officials to host the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Nusman was also the head of the Rio Olympics Organizing Committee. He will not be jailed until the appeal is decided. He has also been convicted of corruption, tax evasion and money laundering.

Nusman’s accomplices have been sentenced to life in prison by former Rio governor Sergio Cabral, businessman Arthur Soares and Rio Olympic Committee executive committee chairman Leonardo Griner.

The investigation found that Nusman had paid bribes to former president of the International Association of Athletics Federations Lamine Diak and his son Papa Diak. The bribe of $ 20 million (Rs 14.8 crore) for 6 votes also proved to be a loan from Soros. It was also found that Dieak’s son Cabral paid $ 5 lakh (Rs 3.7 crore) to get 3 more votes from IOC members.
