Evgeny Prigozin, head of the Wagner Group, a private Russian mercenary company, is recruiting new recruits.

In the video, Prigogjin warns that prisoners who spend six months with Wagner Group will be released and if they defect after serving in Ukraine, they will be executed.

A senior US Department of Defense official said the Wagner Group was trying to recruit 1,500 convicted felons and send them to the battlefield in Ukraine.

According to Reuters, the official, who asked to remain anonymous, told reporters today that many prisoners refuse to join mercenaries despite the efforts of Wagner’s group.

“Based on our information, the Wagner group suffered huge losses in Ukraine, especially young and inexperienced fighters,” he said.

The officer cited a video of Prigogine talking to inmates on prison grounds as evidence of inmate recruitment.

In the video, Prigogine tries to recruit Tajiks, Belarusians and Armenians as mercenaries along with Russian prisoners.

Reuters added, however, that it has not been able to verify the authenticity of the video itself.

The Wagner Group has been working informally since its establishment in 2014 to support pro-Russian separatists fighting government forces in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.

It is known that he is active not only in Ukraine, but also in Syria and Africa.

In the process, he became famous for his atrocities, including being accused of war crimes that killed civilians.

The European Union has approved the Wagner group for acting informally in the Ukraine war.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the Wagner group has no ties to the Russian government, but has insisted that anyone with a private military contract has the right to operate anywhere in the world, as long as it does not violate Russian law .

The efforts of the Wagner Group to recruit fighters have been interpreted as evidence of the serious losses of the mercenary group and the Russian army.

The Pentagon estimates that 80,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or injured in the war in Ukraine that began at the end of February.
