A series of earthquakes occurred on the 18th local time in Taiwan, which belongs to the Pacific earthquake zone known as the ‘Ring of Fire’.
In the eastern part of Taiwan, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 occurred at around 2:44 pm local time on the same day, causing damage one after another.
A three-story building with a convenience store on the first floor collapsed, the ceiling of the train station platform collapsed, six trains collapsed, two bridges and part of an elementary school building collapsed.
Also, at 5:39 pm on the same day, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred in an area 80 km south-southwest of Hualien, eastern Taiwan, and a magnitude 6.4 earthquake also occurred in Guanshan Town, Taitung County, at 9: 41 pm the day before.
The number of casualties caused by the earthquake is not known accurately.
Guo-Chang Chen, head of the Meteorological Bureau’s Earthquake Prediction Center, said the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 was the main earthquake of a series of recent earthquakes, and that the previous day’s earthquake was a precursor to an earthquake that preceded the main earthquake.
