Worries come true… Korean women’s volleyball, VNL’s first ‘0 points’ nightmare

Korean women’s volleyball finished the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Volleyball Nations League (VNL) without ever winning.

Korea, ranked 19th in the world rankings, lost to China with a set score of 1-3 (13-25 25-19 19-25 24-26) in the 12th round of the preliminary round in Sofia, Bulgaria on the 3rd (Korean time).

Korea, which lost all 12 scheduled matches, finished in the bottom of the tournament.

This is the first time that a team has been defeated in four tournaments since its inception in 2018 (canceled due to COVID-19 in 2020). Even considering the number of matches reduced from 16 to 12, this is a disastrous result. Korea did not even have a full set defeat that was given 1 point, so they even wrote the stigma of ‘0 points’ for the first time.

After the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, key players such as Kim Yeon-kyung (Heungkuk Life Insurance), Yang Hyo-jin (Hyundai E&C), and Kim Su-ji (IBK Industrial Bank) retired in large numbers. While giving away 36 sets, he only brought three sets.

Korea lost the first set 13-25 against China. They won the second set 25-19, but lost the third set 19-25.

In the 4th set, they were leading 24-21 and were on the verge of hunting for their first point, but they gave up five runs and collapsed. Hanbi Lee (Pepper Savings Bank) gave 12 points, and Sohwi Kang (GS Caltex), Dahyun Lee (Hyundai E&C), and Jeongah Park (Korea Expressway Corporation) contributed 11 points each.
