The family of a journalist who reported the spread of the corona virus in Wuhan, China, is facing death in a Chinese prison. Zhang Zhan, a journalist, is in a Chinese prison after reporting on the outbreak of Kovid disease in a market in Wuhan and China announcing a lockdown to prevent it. They are on a hunger strike in jail on charges of being caught in a forgery case for telling the truth. Family members say Zhang was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her former lawyer also told the media that her imprisonment was a warning to others who were leaking information that the government was not interested in. Last week, she received the Reporter Without Borders Award for Brave Journalism. Despite calls from human rights activists and media organizations around the world for Zhang to be treated immediately, the Chinese government has not responded.
Zhang released the information on his video blog during the outbreak of Kovid disease in Wuhan and the mass exodus of locals. They also reported that a lockdown had been announced in Wuhan. Zhang’s reports came at a time when the Nice government was keeping the matter secret. She then gave interviews to two foreign media outlets. Zhang, 38, was arrested following the incident. This information was widely reported in the world media at the time.
Subsequently, in December 2020, the court sentenced Zhang to life in prison. He was charged with giving false information in video reports from Wuhan and speaking to foreign media. He was sentenced to four years in prison on charges of inciting and causing trouble, which is usually imposed on those who are not interested in the government.
After his imprisonment, Zhang began a hunger strike. The hunger strike was said to have been carried out in the name of the health of people around the world and the punishment could not be justified. Then there was a worldwide outcry for their release. Meanwhile, government agencies forced Zhang to end his hunger strike. Despite pressure from family members, Zhang did not stop the strike. He was later forcibly fed.
Meanwhile, family members said Zhang could die at any time following a hunger strike. The petitions filed by the family to the jail department and appeals to the government were of no avail. Meanwhile, Zhang’s former lawyer Ren Quanyu spoke to the media in Hong Kong. He said Zhang’s health was very poor.
