Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the G20 summit in Rome, Italy on the 30th and 31st (local time) via video.

On the 29th, Reuters reported that Xi would attend the G20 summit in Beijing via video and give an important speech. Xi has not left China since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) at the beginning of last year.

Italy, the host country of the G20 summit, initially wanted all leaders to gather in Rome to hold the meeting in a face-to-face format, but President Xi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida refused to attend. On the other hand, US President Joe Biden and President Moon Jae-in will attend in person.

The world’s attention is focused on the fact that the G20 summit will be held ahead of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) to be held in the UK from the 31st. G20 member countries account for 80% of global carbon emissions.

Xi is not expected to attend the COP26 meeting either.
