Xiaomi abolished the product name of “Mi”. Will it be replaced with “Xiaomi” in the future? –Engadget Japanese version

It has been reported that Chinese smartphone brand Xiaomi will not use the “Mi” name in future product names.

Xiaomi has multiple smartphone brands such as “Redmi” and “Poco”, but until now, the core of its product lineup has been smartphones, tablets and smart watches starting with “Mi”. For example, in December 2020, the name of the high-end smartphone “Mi 11” equipped with Spandragon 888 was also named “Mi”, and it has grown to be synonymous with the brand.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi announced the high-end smartphone “Xiaomi MIX 4” equipped with an under-display camera earlier this month. The name rule has been changed from the previous model “Mi MIX 3”. And Xiaomi’s representative told XDA Developers of overseas tech media that the name “Mi” will not be used for future Xiaomi products.

The history of Xiaomi’s products is exactly the same as “Mi”, and 10 years have already passed since the introduction of the Mi brand’s first smartphone “Xiaomi Mi 1” in 2011. It should be a very big decision for Xiaomi because it is going to abolish the brand name. On the other hand, if you refer to the example of “Xiaomi MIX 4”, it may be that the product name “Mi” is simply replaced with “Xiaomi” in the future.

In China, where Xiaomi’s knees are located, it has been confirmed that the Mi brand has not been used in product names for some time (the above image is a presentation image of Mi 11 Ultra announced in April this year). The abolition of “Mi” from the product name has been decided for a long time, and it seems that the truth is that it is being gradually reflected from China to the world.
