- What is the “ASI World’s Best Sommelier Competition”?
Organized by the International Sommelier Association (ASI) since 1969. Once every three years, sommeliers selected from around the world compete in knowledge and skills such as “written test”, “tasting” and “service skills” to decide on the best in the world.
- Chef Sommelier Wataru Iwata
Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1989. While studying at Doshisha University, he became fascinated by wine in New Zealand, where he studied abroad, and devoted himself to studying wine for four years. After graduating from university, he gained a sommelier qualification in 2014. In 2019, he took up his current position as THE THOUSAND KYOTO Chef Sommelier.
◆ Grand Prizes
2017 Winner of Japan’s 8th Best Sommelier Competition.
2018 Winner of the 4th ASI Asia Oceania Best Sommelier Competition.
In 2019, he participated in the “16th ASI World’s Best Sommelier Competition” held in Belgium as the representative of Asia and Oceania and advanced to the semi-finals.
2020 he received the “Best Sommelier Award” at “Gault & Millau 2020”.
2021 Winner “Ruinart Sommelier Challenge 2021”.
