A mother and daughter in a yogurt attack in Iran have been arrested by the police for not wearing a hijab.

According to foreign media such as the BBC on the 1st (local time), the Iranian judiciary recently issued an arrest warrant for a man who poured yogurt on two women for not properly covering his hair in public. Authorities also detained women who were harassed by the man on charges of violating the dress code.

The incident took place in Mart near Mashhad in northeastern Iran, which is known as the largest religious city. A man approached two women waiting to pay in a supermarket and poured white yoghurt on their heads. The victim was a mother and daughter and was not wearing a hijab at the time of the incident. The shop owner, who saw the situation, pushed the man and kicked him out.

After the video spread online, Iranian judicial authorities issued arrest warrants for the man and his mother and daughter. The Mizan news agency explained that under the Iranian judiciary the man was accused of removing the hijab, which is prohibited, on charges of insulting and disturbing public order. The head of Iran’s judiciary, Hossein Mosani Ejay, also said recently, “We will prosecute women without mercy.” It is said that the owner of the store who kicked out the perpetrator has been warned by the authorities.

After this debate, the President of Iran, Ebrahim Raishi, reiterated that “women must wear the hijab as a religious obligation” and that “the hijab is a legal matter and compliance with it is an obligation.”

In Iran, a growing number of women oppose the hijab after Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, died in custody by the morality police in September last year for not wearing the hijab properly. Authorities react harshly to women’s anti-government protests.

Iran has continued its intention to severely punish women who do not wear the hijab. The judiciary said on the 6th of last month that those who behave abnormally (not wearing hijab) must be punished.
