Yes, this is Tokyo, Japan.

President Yoon will visit Japan tomorrow (16th) for the first time in about four years as the leader of Korea.

I plan to have a tight schedule for 2 days and 1 night.

President Yoon will arrive in Tokyo on the morning of the 16th, have a lunch meeting with local compatriots, and plans to hold a Korea-Japan summit and lunch with Prime Minister Kishida in the afternoon.

The President’s office said that after the Korea-Japan summit, the two leaders will hold a joint press conference and announce the results of the meeting in turn.

It seems that the joint statement will not come out this time.

A high-ranking official in the presidential office said, “Relations between Korea and Japan have been strained for over 10 years, and distrust has increased since 2018.”

“However, it will be possible to create a preparatory committee to discuss the issues agreed by the two leaders in this meeting,” he said, expecting a joint statement between Korea and Japan to be issued later.

The biggest issue in this meeting is what kind of discussion will take place regarding the compensation solution for forced labor announced by the Korean government.

In an interview with Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun, President Yoon said, “There is no need to worry” about the possibility of a resurgence of the forced labor compensation issue.

In this regard, the President’s office also explained, “Exercising the right to indemnity will lead to a fundamental shake-up of this solution,” and “President Yoon also tried to separate this issue from the issue of the conscription solution.”

This is the first time that the leaders of Korea and Japan have visited each other to hold a summit since President Yoon took office.

The Japanese press is also showing a lot of interest.

Yes, the Japanese media is also scrambling to publish reports related to the Korea-Japan summit.

The Sankei Shimbun reported that Korea and Japan are coordinating in the direction of confirming the resumption of policy dialogue in various areas, such as the Security Policy Council.

The Security Policy Council, a diplomatic and security dialogue between Korea and Japan, was last held in March 2018 and was suspended as relations between the two countries deteriorated.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported that the two countries have coordinated to confirm the normalization of the Korea-Japan Military Information Protection Agreement and GSOMIA with this meeting as an opportunity.

There is also the possibility that Prime Minister Kishida will visit Korea following the restoration of ‘shuttle diplomacy’.

The Sankei Shimbun reported that Prime Minister Kishida was discussing a plan to visit Korea after the G7 summit in Hiroshima in May.
